A FRIVOLOUS BIT OF ART BY CHÉRI HÉROUARD

First a little about La Vie Parisienne

Ever heard of the La Vie Parisienne ( the Parisian life) magazine?
I am talking about the magazine that ceased to exist in 1970.
It was a weekly French magazine that covered subjects like novels, sports, theater, music, and the arts.
The magazine was founded in Paris in 1863 and existed without interruption until 1970.
Wow, that's a long run! Well done!

It was wildly popular at the start of the 20th century…
And after it changed hands in 1905, the new editor Charles Saglio actually tweaked the format to suit the modern reader.
It soon evolved into a more risqué read, a smidgen more erotic, also concerning imagery…

With its new mix of subjects such as short stories, a bit of gossip, fashion, love, arts and also things like the stock exchange it was well-loved.
It managed to reflect the changing interests and values of the population at the start of 1900 concerning fashion and frivolity with verve…

And that all went together fabulously with Art Deco/Art Nouveau style artwork; some quite satirical, humorous, but also sexy, erotic depictions and illustrations to go with the grand variety of articles or for on the cover…

There were a lot of illustrators that contributed their art to the magazine and one of these artists was Chéri Hérouard…

Chéri Hérouard

So, Chéri Hérouard was one of the main illustrators of the popular magazine and continued his work for La Vie Parisienne until 1952.
Next to his work for the magazine, he illustrated for books such as 'Dangerous Liaisons' in 1945 and under the alias of Herrick, he also created juicy, erotic and sadomasochistic illustrations for a variety of books including the Kama Sutra.

And that last bit of information, about the sadomasochistic illustrations, earns a bit of fascination really because if you look it up you come across heaps of drawings depicting mainly women spanking, flogging and doing all sorts of sexy kinkiness to mainly other women…
And indeed that's because Chéri Hérouard illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches.

Art To Cherish

Chéri Hérouard's overall oeuvre is wildly wide; from beautiful fairytale-like pictures to fashion illustrations to wonderfully sexy, erotic art.
This main man, this treasure, this artist, this Chéri (darling in English) defo created artwork and erotic art to cherish…
